Mercedes-Benz GLC wins SUV of the Year Award

December 9th, 2016 by

Handsome, well-rounded, and with the latest in technology, the Mercedes-Benz GLC is one of our favorite vehicles here at Mercedes-Benz of Athens. The crossover SUV class has been one of the most popular vehicle classes in recent years, with the market becoming more and more crowded. While the luxury brands were late to the party, they certainly have come on strong – with even Porsche and Maserati getting involved, you know the class is here to stay.

It is one thing to be part of the class, but it’s another thing to be an honors student. Only in its freshman year, the Mercedes-Benz GLC has been awarded one of the top honors available to the class, being named the 2017 Motor Trend SUV of the Year. This isn’t just the “best luxury SUV” or “best crossover SUV” either – the award is for the best SUV available on the mass market, ranging from the reliable entry level models like the Honda CR-V up to the Porsche Cayenne. The GLC becomes the third Mercedes-Benz SUV model to win this award in the last decade, following in the path of the first- and second-generation GL models.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Exterior

Replacing the GLK, the GLC has made an immediate impact. From the outside, it is clear that the designers were hard at work making the new GLC stand apart from its ancestor – the shape is pleasing and graceful, sporting a moderately aggressive front end that leads back to a simple, smart greenhouse. Handsome sheet metal and a rear end that brings everything together nicely allow the GLC to shine as a vehicle that embodies the Mercedes-Benz design language seen across all vehicles.

The smart styling is also functional, with a longer wheelbase and well-proportioned cabin allowing the GLC to have one of the larger interiors in the smaller crossover SUV class. This not only leaves room for passengers and cargo, but allows Mercedes-Benz to display a full range of design sensibilities as well as technological advancements. Thanks to a quiet ride that keeps wind and road noise out, evaluators were able to take in the warm, dark wood trim with options such as Burl Walnut and Black Ash, with seating wrapped in MB-Tex fabric. The central controller with seven-inch display is home to a premium audio system, with optional upgrades to a Burmester surround sound system and COMAND hard-drive navigation available. Mercedes-Benz’s advanced mbrace packages offer safety, entertainment, and convenience upgrades.

While the interior certainly wowed the evaluators, and the exterior was seen as pleasing and handsome but also a bit conservative, what sealed the deal was the capabilities of the Mercedes-Benz GLC. Equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, the GLC puts down 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque through a highly-tuned nine-speed transmission. This allows for maximum acceleration while keeping fuel usage low, a winning combination for families and commuters alike. Paired with your choice of rear- or all-wheel drive, Motor Trend evaluators noted that the engine “…feels very much like a V-6, and a good one at that.” While the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty miles per hour in 6.8 seconds is unlikely to be tested by most drivers, it is important to know you have that grunt when merging into traffic.

Complementing the power and performance capabilities is a raft of safety features. Mercedes-Benz has been a leader in the move towards autonomous driving and advanced avoidance features, and the GLC has plenty on display. Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Attention Assist, Crosswind Assist, a rearview camera, and adaptive braking technology are all standard. The optional safety system bring the whole package together – with Active Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, PRE-SAFE Brake, Surround View, and so much more, the GLC may be the top SUV available when it comes to keeping the safety of its passengers, and those around the vehicle, in mind.

While it is certainly appreciated, and we here at Mercedes of Athens are pleased to see the GLC garnering such awards, it’s not a surprise to us. Mercedes-Benz is known for exacting detail when it comes to vehicles, regardless of the class of vehicle they are. From the award-winning C-Class sedan, to the numerous crossovers and SUVs, to the powerful AMG® line, Mercedes-Benz continues to be the premiere luxury brand. Come in and test drive any of the line of award-winning vehicles, and see which one is the perfect fit for your lifestyle.
