Mercedes-Benz introduces the X-Class Truck Concept

X-Class

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to Mercedes-Benz aficionados that they are making this bold move. While more widely known as the world-class producer of exhilarating performance luxury vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is also one of the most successful commercial-vehicle producers in the world. From full-size tractors and straight trucks, to cargo vans and smaller commercial vehicles, Mercedes-Benz has a pedigree in the world of the working vehicle. With the X-Class, Mercedes-Benz finally gets to combine its luxury sensibilities and heavy-duty prowess into a single vehicle.

A true combination of style and utilitarianism, the recently-unveiled Mercedes-Benz X-Class truck aims to be the first successful luxury pick-up truck. Unlike the past concepts and renderings across the luxury class, and failed attempts such as the Lincoln Blackwood and Mark LT, this is a pure vehicle – designed from the ground up for luxury and performance in one. The first true premium pickup.

An imposing mid-size truck, the 2017 X-Class features a five-passenger cabin, with the expected Mercedes-Benz materials and fit and finish. This means a warm, dark color palette, supple nubuck and nappa leather, aluminum trim highlights, and a variety of finishes including carbon fiber and open-pore wood. This is an excellent complement to the exterior sheet metal that takes Mercedes-Benz design sensibilities and melds them with traditional truck proportions. A wide front apron with headlights extending into the wings, accompanied by flaring wheel arches, gives the X-Class a wide, athletic stance. Smoothly integrated running boards underscore the clean side metal, while wheel sizes range up to 22 inches in diameter. Traditional chromed SUV trim along the lower edge of the rear is offset by the futuristic continuous LED light strip set in slim chrome surround that highlights the tailgate.

Mercedes-Benz Technology

Technology and connectivity are the buzzwords of the automotive world today, but while everyone else is still learning them, Mercedes-Benz is mastering them. The X-Class will set new standards for the pickup truck segment, featuring a communication module with on-board SIM card that allows the Mercedes me connect services to be accessed from connected smartphones, tablets, or PCs. Safety tech will be truly next-generation, with camera, radar, and ultrasound sensors working together to assist the driver and enhance both safety and comfort. Entertainment won’t be overlooked, with the X-Class receiving a quality sound system with available premium upgrades.

X-Class Engine and Suspension

The world-class engine underneath the stylish, powerdome hood is a six-cylinder diesel engine, and will be mated with one of Mercedes-Benz’s advanced automatic transmissions, along with 4MATIC® permanent all-wheel drive. Combined with the heavy-duty ladder-type frame, this will allow the X-Class carry a payload up to 1.1 tons and tow up to 3.5 tons.

Trucks are for more than just work though. The X-Class is built to play as well, on road or off. A specially-designed suspension features wide axles and a precisely calibrated spring and damper set-up to provide precise steering and agile cornering on asphalt. Electronic traction control and on-demand differential locks provide power to the right wheels when required, while a locking rear and a locking inter-axle differential makes it easier to conquer off-road obstacles and inclines. Underride guards, matte carbon wheel arches, an electric winch, and a metal hook to the rear provide additional off-road safety and capability.

Unfortunately, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class will not debut in the United States immediately. The 2017 production-model X-Class will be available in Europe, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. However, at Mercedes-Benz of Athens, we expect that it will come to our truck-loving audience in the very near future, and we will be the first to let you know. In the meantime, come by our showroom and register your interest with our staff, or take a look at other current Mercedes-Benz offering to see if they fit your lifestyle needs.
