State Botanical Garden of Georgia

Not far from downtown Athens, you’ll find the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. The University of Georgia operates the garden as a gift to the people of the state, so admittance and parking are both free. Explore the garden’s more than 300 acres and feast your eyes on a rich variety of plants that come from both local areas and from places around the world. There are more than five miles of nature trails within the garden. Visit the gift shop to pick up a few souvenirs.
Leave your dogs at home, and keep in mind that no skateboarding or bicycling is allowed on the garden’s paths.

College football is one of the nation’s most popular pastimes, and you’ll find that the spirit of football is particularly vibrant in Athens. During football season, head to the university’s Sanford Stadium — the 6th largest stadium in the country — to watch the Bulldogs as they fight to honor their school and hometown. Many notable names in football, such as Champ Bailey and Matthew Stafford, attended UGA.
Learn some of the school’s football traditions before you go to a game. Oftentimes, they’ll start a game with one side of the stadium shouting “Georgia” while the other side shouts “Bulldogs.” You’ll notice that a lot of the students dress up to attend the games. Georgia has some serious team spirit!

The town of Athens, GA is steeped in American history. Maybe the best example is the pink house of former converderate General, T.R.R. Cobb. A rich stop for history buffs, the T.R.R. Cobb House brings us back to the mid 1800’s and the heart of the Civil War. A popular destination for local field trips, visitors will be able to experience an interactive presentation and tour of this house built in 1839. A visit to the T.R.R. Cobb House is also a cheap afternoon, seeing as it will only cost you a $2 donation.
